Danes most often gamble online (October 2024)

Figures from the Danish Gambling Authority show that Danes are increasingly gamble online rather than in land-based locations. At the same time, online casinos are the Danes' favourite type of online gambling. 

41 per cent of inquiries to StopSpillet is from young people under 26 years old (September 2024)

Figures from the Danish Gambling Authority's StopSpillet helpline and exclusion system ROFUS (Register of Self-Excluded Players) show that especially young people under the age of 26 make use of the offers. 

Almost 3,000 have contacted helpline against gambling addiction

Since the Danish Gambling Authority opened the StopSpillet helpline in 2019, the advisers have received 2,933 inquiries. Figures indicate that many of the players who contact the helpline have a problematic relationship with gambling. 

50,000 Danes have self-excluded from gambling (April 2024)

Increasingly more Danes choose to self-exclude from gambling. In April 2024, the number of individuals registered with ROFUS (register of self-excluded players) reached 50,000. Just under two thirds have opted for a permanent exclusion.   

Danes largely gamble on sites with a Danish licence (January 2024)

Figures from a new survey of Danes' online gambling habits show that the vast majority choose gambling sites that have a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority. Among other things, types of gambling products, winnings and bonuses have an impact on whether players gamble on unlicensed sites.

Many young people under the age of 18 gamble online (November 2023)

Figures from a new study show that approximately 32,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 17 have gambled online in the past year. More young people are also using skins from video games as stakes in games (gambling). 

More and more illegal gambling sites are being blocked (August 2023)

The Danish Gambling Authority's increased focus on illegal gambling sites pays off. Since 2012, 276 illegal gambling sites have been blocked, and more than half have been blocked in the last three years.

Danes spent an average of DKK 2,350 on gambling in 2022 (June 2023)

The Danes spend less money on gambling products and services than they do in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. At the same time, gambling in Denmark to a greater extent takes place online compared to many other European countries

Many compulsive gamblers start gambling at a young age (May 2023)

Since the Danish Gambling Authority established the helpline  StopSpillet in 2019, the advisers have received almost 2,500 calls and chats. The trend is clear: the majority of people with gambling problems have gambled before their 25th birthday. 

The number of self-excluded players reaches 40,000 (March 2023)

Increasingly more Danes choose to self-exclude from gambling. In February 2023, the number of persons registered with ROFUS (register of self-excluded players) reached 40,000. Just under two thirds have opted for a permanent exclusion.

10 years with a liberalised market: Danes’ gambling spend has increased (September 2022)

Danes’ average gambling spend has increased by about 7 percent since the liberalisation of the gambling market in 2012. The increase is especially due to the higher spending on betting and online casino. Since 2012, the Danes have become wealthier and thus, their gambling spend account for about the same share of the Danish economy as before the liberalisation. 

10 years with a liberalised market: Danes prefer gambling websites with a Danish licence (September 2022)

In 2012, betting and online casino were liberalised in Denmark. Data from the Danish Gambling Authority shows that an increasing share of online gambling in Denmark takes place on licensed websites. In fact, the share is among the highest in Europe.

More than 30,000 Danes have self-excluded from gambling (January 2022)

A continuously increasing number of Danes register with the Danish Gambling Authority’s register of self-excluded players (ROFUS). The most recent figures show that 30,451 players have registered with ROFUS. They also show that young men are strongly overrepresented among the registered.

Helpline for compulsive gamblers receive more calls from young men (March 2021)

Since the Danish Gambling Authority's helpline, StopSpillet (StopGambling) opened in 2019, the advisers have received 1,185 calls. The calls show, that the cast majority of the persons who have gambling problems are men, who started gambling at a young age. 

Still more Danes self-exclude from gambling (March 2021)

Since the Danish Gambling Authority’s register of self-excluded players (ROFUS) was established in 2012, an increasing number of Danes have chosen to self-exclude from gambling.

The typical online gambler is a young man (March 2021)

Data from the Danish Gambling Authority shows that most of all gambling accounts for online casinos and betting in Denmark are created by men. At the same time, the accounts are in most instances held by men under 36.

The Danish Gambling Authority blocks 55 illegal gambling websites (March 2021)

The city court ruled in favour of the Danish Gambling Authority to have a record-breaking number of illegal websites blocked.
